North Capital's Pizza Dumplings and Jianbing
Ahead of this year's Pizza Cup and Festival, we are serving up bite-sized details about this year's participants in a series we call Pizza Mania. Today we bring you North Capital.
As a Beixinqiao bastion of bottled beer and pub grub, North Capital has no qualms with pushing the creative envelope – in fact, you’d be dead wrong if you were to assume it for just another hostel bar. Their experimental pizza dumplings and jianbing help bolster that claim, delivering, for the most part, one of the most delectable snack foods any bar in Beijing currently has on offer.
The inspiration for the dishes, as described by manager Paul Peng, is his liking of using dough as a vessel to envelope both Western and Chinese cuisines.
The fried pizza dumplings (pictured above), six for RMB 30, are made using cheddar and mozzarella cheese, Italian sausage, pepperoni, and mushrooms. And despite being slightly greasy, the pizza potstickers wash down nicely with the bevy of beers North Capital has on tap or stocked in its fridges.
North Capital's pizza jianbing
The pizza jianbing, RMB 25, despite bearing resemblance to a quesadilla, is itself a brazenly unique concoction. The wrap, similar to the jianbing you find on the capital’s streets – made with different types of dough mixed with egg – gives the pizza jianbing a far softer texture than the brittle, grilled tortilla wrap that comes with most quesadillas.
